To the Panda Poker Club of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Ettie Garner last week wrote that her husband Cactus Jack “left off the practice [of playing poker] a good many years ago.” With the poker & whiskey vote lined up for him by John L. Lewis’ attack last fortnight Mr. Garner announced in Texas: “I’m going to get eviler every day.” He went bass-fishing at once with his crony, Ross Brumfield, Uvalde garage man.

Out for Mr. Garner’s Presidential nomination last week plumped genial, ineffectual Samuel Rayburn, who is Franklin Roosevelt’s floorleader in the House but Mr. Garner’s political heir.
