Animals: Hit & Run

Motoring in Manhattan one day last month, one Julius Mercz struck and killed a wire-haired terrier, drove on. A bystander reported his license number to the S. P. C. A. Under a State law amended last summer, hit-&-run drivers may be punished for injuring animals as well as humans. Last week, in the first application of that law, Julius Mercz was haled into court, fined $50, lost his driver’s license for six months.
