As his charge for remaining “loyal” to the Nanking Government thrifty General Chen Chi-tang has demanded and received more than $3,000,000 in the past three months. Flush with cash, General Chen turned his thoughts last week to tender young monkeys, the kind served temptingly in Canton restaurants as a spécialité de la maison, which tastes not unlike chicken.

Next day Canton restaurateurs, famed as the foremost in all China, received with dismay this official order:

“The butchering of monkeys is prohibited. Monkeys possess many traits of men, including intelligence. Therefore, they should be protected. The serving of monkey meat or monkey brains is hereafter prohibited in Canton.”
