John J. Mitchell, 73, potent Chicago banker, last week gave over the presidency of the Illinois Merchants Trust Co. to Eugene M. Stevens, previously vice president; himself shifted to the chairmanship of the board of directors. For 43 years (1880-1923) he had been president of the Illinois Trust & Savings Bank, where he had started as a messenger. When in 1923 it became the Illinois Merchants Trust Co. he kept on as president.
