Last week the Federal Government exported 42 Chinese from Ellis Island as the result of raids in Manhattan’s Chinatown, while some 200 more were held for deportation at the Government’s expense (about $200 a head). Tong wars (TIME, Sept. 7, 21) had resulted in drawing the attention of immigration officials to the number of Orientals who could show no good reason for their continued presence in the U. S.
Meanwhile in Boston. Joe Wong, laundry Tongster, was shot down over his shirts and soiled linen. Police Captain Goodwin threatened to have Boston’s Chinatown condemned and destroyed by the Board of Health and Building Commissions, and to undertake deportation proceedings in his bailiwick.
At Cleveland, Yee Chock was decapitated with an ordinary meat cleaver in his room in the Chinatown. Police and health officials promptly made a raid and seized about 500 Chinese. City Manager Hopkins ordered fire and health authorities to proceed with condemnation proceedings of homes and filthy firesides.
