National Affairs: Strayed

Between man and Nature, elk and deer lead sorry lives and sometimes meet tragic deaths. Last week, the Department of the Interior bemoaned it.

A fortnight ago in Yellowstone National Park, 253 elk became restless. Ignoring the assigned boundaries of the enclave, they wandered out of the park. Unpitying hunters slew them.

In Glacier National Park, heavy snows drove elk and deer into the lower valleys, out of the park. Some 15 are known to have been killed.

Nothing can be done. The National preserves are short a few animals. A few more have gone to the Happy Hunting Grounds to be hunted over and over again by the Red Men of the dim past.
