Patricia Ryan, 75, second managing editor of People and its first female chief. Tapped in 1982, she began the magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” franchise three years later. In 1987 she was named editor of Life.

Eusebio, 71, soccer legend who scored 733 goals in 745 matches. Voted one of the 10 best players of all time, he led Portugal to a third-place finish at the 1966 World Cup.

Juanita Moore, 99, African American who gained a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her memorable performance as a single mother opposite Lana Turner in Douglas Sirk’s 1959 film Imitation of Life.
