Born. To Crown Prince Jean, 33, heir to Luxembourg’s throne, and Princess Josephine Charlotte, 26, sister of King Baudouin of Belgium: their first child, a daughter; in Luxembourg. Name: Princess Marie Astrid. Weight: 6 Ibs. 10 oz.

Married. Vincente Minnelli, 50, cinema director (An American in Paris); and French-born Georgette Magnani, 25; each for the second time (his first was Judy Garland); in Riverside, Calif.

Died. William K. (for Kerrigan) Howard, 54, pioneering movie director (White Gold in 1927, Transatlantic in 1931); of cancer; in Hollywood.

Died. Major General Kenneth Frank Cramer, 59, wealthy Connecticut coal dealer and politician, longtime National Guard officer who rose to general’s rank in World War II; of a heart attack while on a hunting trip in Bavaria, where he was stationed as commander of U.S. Army troops in southern Germany. A rock-hard disciplinarian, he drew heavy fire from mothers, wives and Congressmen in 1951 for his rigid handling of his 43rd (Connecticut National Guard) Division, and later, in Germany, set off more outcries by his zealous efforts to stamp out drinking and promiscuity (he had a lieutenant colonel cashiered for drunkenness and adultery).

Died. Geza Herczeg, 65, Hungarian-born playwright and scenario writer (The Life of Emile Zola, Wonder Bar); of a heart attack; in Rome.

Died. Augustin Duncan, 80, veteran Broadway actor (A Man of the People, Lute Song) and producerdirector, brother of the late dancer Isadora Duncan and Poet-Lecturer Raymond Duncan; of a heart attack; in New York City. In the late ’20s, at the height of his career, he began losing his sight but continued to act, in 1932 successfully played the part of the blind beggar in Synge’s The Well of the Saints, acted other roles with such skill that audiences often forgot that he could not see.
