For picnickers who want to know just what they are getting in for, two University of Tennessee graduate students gave some statistical hints from their study of the local bug populations. Every sandwich dropped on their leafy hillside will fall on an average of 102 bugs; a picnic cloth will cover 14,745. Estimated population per acre: more than 40 million chiggers, ants, .spiders, beetles, leaf hoppers, pill bugs, flies, bees, wasps and moths.
