When the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by two of Hollywood’s “unfriendly ten,” convicted two years ago for contempt of Congress, the decision (TIME, April 24) meant that the other eight would also have to start serving their prison terms. Last week, readers of the Hollywood Reporter noted one repercussion in the classified ads:
“Owner Going to Jail.
“One of the taciturn ten offers ten-room house for immediate sacrifice sale. Tennis Court. Nr. Beach in Santa Monica. $26,000 in direct sale by owner; $11,000 cash required. Call S.M. 5-7274.”
At that number, Screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr., who had refused to tell the House Un-American Activities Committee whether or not he was a Communist, waited for prospects to call.
