1) Louisiana State (7-0)—edged unbeaten Mississippi, 7-3 (see above).
2) Northwestern (6-0)—warmed up for this week’s big Big Ten game with Wisconsin by crushing Indiana, 30-13.
3) Syracuse (6-0)—overran Pittsburgh 35-0, with even a fifth-string fullback named Don Rackiewicz running back a pass interception 100 yds. for a last-minute touchdown.
4) Southern California (6-0)—rolled for 21 first downs v. California’s 8, but needed a key block by Guard Mike McKeever (TIME, Oct. 26) to win, 14-7.
5) Texas (7-0)—contained the passes of Quarterback Don Meredith (TIME, Nov. 2), beat Southern Methodist, 21-0.
6) Mississippi (6-1)—lost little face in its 7-3 defeat by Louisiana State.
7) Wisconsin (5-1)—picked off six pass interceptions, downed gallant, outweighed Michigan, 19-10.
8) Purdue (3-1-2)—settled for a 7-7 tie with a hopped-up Illinois team led by line-backing Guard Bill Burrell, who was in on an amazing 26 tackles.
9) Penn State (7-0)—freely used its subs in coasting past West Virginia, 28-10, set up the East’s game of the year this week with Syracuse.
10) Auburn (5-1)—outslogged Florida in the rain, 6-0.
