The Press: Modesty

From Rugby, England, one R. H. L. White wrote the Chicago Tribune to ask a question that puzzles a lot of Englishmen: “I have recently read that the Chicago Tribune [is] America’s England Hater No. 1. . . . Why?”

The Trib, whose Publisher Robert Rutherford McCormick acquired some of his imperfectly assimilated education in the British public schools, answered in an editorial that Mr. White was the victim of “inspired propaganda,” probably emanating from the British Foreign Office. Added the Trib: “Calling us names . . . has made us the best known newspaper in the world. We have succeeded the Times of London in that respect.”
