The governor of China’s Szechwan Province is a wise Oriental. His province has the world’s only supply of much-sought-after giant pandas. His problem: what he could buy that was one-half so precious as the stuff he had to sell. His answer: scholarships. For two pandas, f.o.b., he demanded two one-year scholarships, complete with tuition and living expenses, for deserving Szechwan students.

On these terms the London Zoo grabbed the 1946 quota of giant pandas (two). Last week the San Diego Zoo was negotiating through the U.S. State Department for the 1947 quota, and looking for a U.S. college to put up the Szechwan boys who came with the deal.
