Science: No More Wires?

To test a domestic phone service without cables or wires, a string of radio relay stations between New York City and Boston will be set up as soon as “war conditions” permit. A.T.&T. President Walter S. Gifford thus reported to stockholders last week. The “vehicle” visualized: ultrashort waves, known as microwaves. Probable early use: phone service to isolated communities. Ultimate possibility: no more telephone wires and cables.
