How to survive in wartime, in the seaman’s hazardous trade, is the subject of a practical handbook for U.S. merchant seamen, to be published next week. A few hints from Safety for Seamen:
¶ On the beach: “Get over the effects [of drinking] as quickly as possible. Take plenty of fluids, a good diet and give yourself three yeast tablets three times a day.”
¶Under air attack: “Lie flat on the deck pressed hard against a ledge. . . . Standing with your head against something solid is the next best [bet].”
¶In the sea: “You can tread water, take off your pants or jacket, tie a knot in the legs or sleeves, button them up and swing them through the air so that the arms and legs fill with air. Then twist the open ends so that the air stays in and you have a life preserver.”
