After [a panel discussion on prioritizing women’s health](https://time.com/6976877/time100-health-panel-halle-berry-eli-lilly-medical-gaslighting-women/), three TIME100 Health honorees gave toasts about surviving [noma](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/noma), a severe gangrenous disease of the mouth and face; the healthcare advocates pioneering research and treatments related to COVID; and hospitals under attack in conflict zones. ## Surviving noma [Fidel Strub](https://time.com/6967236/okanlawon-strub/), a survivor of Noma, has led an awareness campaign on the disease, which mostly affects malnourished young children living in extreme poverty. In 2023, the WHO [officially recognized noma](https://www.who.int/news/item/15-12-2023-who-officially-recognizes-noma-as-a-neglected-tropical-disease) as a neglected tropical disease, noting that early detection is essential for effective treatment. Murabit said in her toast that healthcare facilities have been increasingly caught in political violence over the last year. “Hospitals, which are meant to be places of healing and hope—I always say that a hospital is more spiritual to me than any mosque, church or synagogue because you hear more prayers in it—become at best overburdened and at worst, attacked,” she said. “It will come as no surprise to many of you that, in those moments of crisis and insecurity, it is women and children who are the most vulnerable. Violence exacerbates infectious disease, it exacerbates malnutrition and maternal and child death.” Murabit spoke in particular about Gaza, where Israeli attacks have killed more than 35,000 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry. She pointed out how most of those killed are believed to be women and children. [00:11] Frankly, I have ten brothers and sisters, [00:13] so I walk through life with a pretty thick skin and very rarely feel intimidated. [00:18] And in this room, I feel intimidated and humbled and grateful. [00:21] So thank you all for all the tirless work you do to [00:24] advance care and dignity and opportunity for so many people around the world. [00:29] Now, when I was asked to give this toast, [00:31] I started thinking about what gives me energy and inspires me. [00:36] And I started my own medical career in conflict in a conflict zone. [00:42] And I am immensely grateful in [00:45] a very bitter sweet way and [00:48] inspired by the courage and dedication of health workers in conflict zones, [00:52] be it Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, [00:54] Ukraine, and too many others around the world. [02:41] But it's only when we actively invest in [02:44] their leadership and not just their leadership in healthcare, [02:46] because as you heard today, you need to get policymakers. [02:49] You need to get industry. [02:51] You need to get investment in research, [02:53] which means we need which means we need [02:56] women's leadership in every sector and at every level. [03:06] My dad always says being a physician is a peacemaker. [03:10] And part of me thinks he said that just so I went into medical school, [03:14] but that's another conversation. [03:15] Any kids of immigrants, please feel free to see me. [03:19] But I actually don't think anything embodies courage and [03:24] leadership more than those who are on the front lines in conflict zones around the world, [03:29] than the very women and children who are at risk and the women who continue despite [03:35] the enormous toll on their mental health and [03:37] the enormous personal risk to provide [03:39] care and dignity and opportunity for their communities.
