The statement came one night after a fan, [23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado, died](https://time.com/6337249/taylor-swift-fan-dies-rio-concert-conditions/) before the singer’s Eras concert show at Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. “I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio,” Swift said, in a post shared via Instagram stories. “The safety and wellbeing of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to, and always will, come first.” The temperatures in Rio remain a cause for concern, and complaints have been raised about the conditions at the concert venue. On Friday, temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius/95 degrees Fahrenheit in Rio, as eager Swift fans descended upon the stadium to witness the South American leg of the singer’s critically-acclaimed Eras Tour. Among the crowd was Benevides Machado, who reportedly sought assistance at the concert venue, ahead of the show starting, as she was feeling unwell. Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reports that Benevides Machado was then taken to the[ Hospital Salgado Filho](https://prefeitura.rio/tag/hospital-salgado-filho/), where she died. The publication notes that the [cause of death was a cardiorespiratory arrest](https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/ilustrada/2023/11/fa-de-taylor-swift-morre-apos-passar-mal-durante-show-no-rio-de-janeiro.shtml). However, the cause of death has yet to be officially confirmed. Other concert attendees have since complained about the conditions at the venue. They said they were unable to bring their own water into the concert and struggled to gain access to water once in there. Video footage from Friday’s concert, which saw Swift perform to a 60,000-strong crowd, shows the singer [stopping the show momentarily so that water can be distributed](https://www.instagram.com/p/CzzhfXssu8u/?hl=en) to fans calling out for it. “If somebody says they need water when it’s this hot, they really need it,” Swift can be heard saying. Meanwhile, some fans started to chant for “agua.” In another moment from the gig, Swift can be seen throwing a bottle of water into the crowd herself. Following news of Benevides Machado’s death, government officials have criticized the reported conditions at the concert, organized by the Time for Fun events company. On Nov. 18, ahead of Swift’s announcement that her next show would be postponed, Rio de Janeiro's Mayor Eduardo Paes spoke out on X (formerly Twitter). “[The loss of a young woman's life ](https://twitter.com/eduardopaes/status/1725851498683187602)yesterday at the show in Engenhão is unacceptable. Obviously, we are still finding out more details about the circumstances of what happened,” he wrote. “In any case, I have already ordered the municipality's Executive Chief of Operations to demand action with the production of the show.” Paes went on to list a number of measures that he anticipated should be put in place: quicker entry into the concert for fans “to keep the public out of the sun,” along with “new water distribution points,” and an increase in on-site ambulances and “brigade members.” ### More From TIME Brazil’s National Consumer Secretary, Wadih Damous, also spoke out following Benevides Machado’s death. In a series of posts on X, he outlined guidelines that should be followed in the future, to avoid any such event happening again. “In addition to the [distribution of free water, ](https://twitter.com/wadih%5Fdamous/status/1725931284038357243)through ‘hydration islands,’ which are easily accessible and visible to the public, bottles will be allowed for personal use,” he wrote. This was [echoed by Justice Minister Flávio Dino](https://twitter.com/FlavioDino/status/1725829531250970829), who said that “the Consumer Secretariat of the Ministry of Justice will adopt immediate measures” about “access to water at shows and other public events.” It is understood that the government will be further investigating the events that took place at the Friday concert. Ahead of Saturday’s gig being postponed, event organizers [Time for Fun stated](https://www.instagram.com/p/Czyx2xXurEt/) that “sealed water cups” would be allowed into the venue. Meanwhile, Swift has expressed her grief over the loss of a fan. Following the announcement of Benevides Machado’s death on Friday, the singer posted a statement to her Instagram stories, noting she was “devastated.” “I want to say now, I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends," she wrote. There's been a lot to be happy about that. So I get so excited when I go to North Ward show and I get to perform, and I get to do a performance. I've always wanted to do since middle school, and I get so excited when the songs that I wrote about something really personal to Migos. Number one, and I looked down and I see people singing the words back to me, that makes me so much happier than than anything could really ever bring me down. So it's like you've got channeling that hurt when you when it's the right time to and also just the fact that life isn't really good. Where do you find the inspiration for your songs? I find inspiration in human emotion. The way that we treat each other, the way that we make each other feel and the pattern of it and how, you know, it repeats itself so often but we never learn from it. It's all the different things that you learn from relationships. Whether it be friends, or family, or loved mostly love. I just love watching people and how we react to feeling. So, I think love is always going to be at number one. What sort of music do you listen to? I love Def Leppard, I've always loved Def. Leppard ever since I was little, my mom is always listen to Def Leppard. So they were my favorite band from the time, I was a little kid. So now my little Victor in the Philippines asked, what advice do you have for young and aspiring songwriters and songwriters is 2. Write your songs. Not for a specific demographic or for getting on the radio or for anything commercial like that, write your songs to the person that you're writing that song about. That's the mindset that I go into when I sit down to write a song, I think to myself, okay, who's this about fill in the blank and then I think what would I say to him? Right now, if I could, and if I had the nerve to, what would I say? You think of some Rhymes and you put it all together. Earl Worthington in Chicago wants to know what other artists would you like to do a duet with I would like to do a duet with Taylor Hanson. Because I have loved him since I was eight and it's like, never going to end. I'm never going to stop loving them and Taylor Hanson has an amazing voice. How do you find balance between your personal and professional life? Professional life is kind of interesting because they bleed together about the guy that sits next to me in class, in 10th Grade or the person that I saw yesterday that we made eye contact for a split second, but it was enough to inspire song stand, for me, I just try not to get too territorial about what's personal time and what's professional time because if I'm sitting at home in my hometown and it's my one day off, in three months, and I'm sitting there and I'm at a restaurant and a line forms in front of my table that whines around the entire restaurant. I'm not going to say this is my day off, I won't sign your autograph because This is what I've asked for for my entire life. Is this the one thing that I wanted and the fact that I actually get to do? That one thing that I've always wanted, I don't think I'm ever going to want to complain about it. College is something that I always thought I was going to do and I discovered music, I still thought I was going to go to college because I never really actually thought I'd get to do this and I work really hard for it. And then I started getting further with it later when I would love to take college classes and getting the college experience is something I'm planning on doing a pretty soon because I'm going to go visit, my friend, Abigail in college and see what that's life.
