The experience taught her to take risks and not be afraid of failure. And she credits that for her success now. “First you must fall before you learn to fly,” Yeoh told TIME Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal. “I think that’s something that’s resonated throughout my life and my career.” Yeoh was named [TIME’s first Icon of the Year](https://time.com/icon-of-the-year-2022-michelle-yeoh/) this week. Her four-decade career has a film reel that includes the iconic _Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon_, as well as _Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings_. She’s taken on the role of actor, producer and writer, and most recently announced a part in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” musical, her first time taking on a singing role. Her biggest Hollywood breakthrough, though, is the 2022 film _Everything Everywhere All At Once_. The 60-year-old performed most of her stunts in the action-filled movie, in which she portrayed an immigrant mother who is the only one that can save the multiverse. “This is really unbelievable. I think when I started my career, people would never have thought a little girl from Malaysia \[would\] one day \[be\] here getting the Icon of the Year award,” Yeoh said. “Thank you for your love and care and embracing someone who’s very different from you, \[and\] comes from a different place. [00:18] And there's so much love for you out there and I just wanted [00:21] to start by reading you a few examples of some of what we've [00:27] seen, come over the transom in the last 48 hours. [00:31] Pretty special. [00:33] We're celebrating this moment in history. [00:35] Sometimes it feels like a never-ending battle against ages and [00:39] sexism racism and all those other isms but not today. [00:43] Not while we take it to applaud the icon of the year. [00:49] Between here's another between 1992 and 94. [00:54] I saw four of the seven films, [00:56] Michelle yeoh starred in, she's been kicking ass ever since [01:05] Anise and finally, this is, I love this NVM me, [01:09] which my daughter says is Instagram for nevermind. [01:13] I just I'm just quietly sobbing, I love Michelle yeoh, [01:18] so so much and she deserved all these accolades 20 years ago. [01:27] So so first of all, congratulations, the the response to everything [01:34] everywhere. All at once, it's just been incredible. [01:38] Lots of Oscar for you, but you didn't deserve all these accolades [01:42] 20 years ago and I want to just start by asking you. [01:46] You know what this moment means for you, [01:49] how you see it in the Arc of your career? [01:55] This is really unbelievable. [01:57] I think when I started my career who would have thought a young [02:02] girl, a little girl from Evil Malaysia. [02:05] Would one day be she getting the icon of the Year award? [03:35] Crazy Rich Asians you've done Marvel Star Trek Minions, [03:41] Everything what what kinds of parts are most meaningful [03:46] to you and and has that changed? [03:49] I think, you know what I am passionate. [03:51] This is not work for me. [03:53] This is passion and the thing is [03:57] When I choose to do a project, [03:59] one committed to do something, it takes very precious time away [04:03] from my family. [04:04] So when I'm committed to it is because I really want to be there [04:09] and I really want to be part of the whole collaborative [04:13] effort. And I think I'm very blessed in the sense that in the [04:17] movie business, making a true collaboration is never about [04:23] one person is not one without the other is everybody coming [04:28] totally committed. Like the everything bagel don't really [04:42] choose the role that come to you. [04:44] They come to you with open arms. [04:47] I've been very blessed from yes, James Bond, [04:50] protein, Tiger Hidden, Dragon Memoirs of a Geisha, [04:55] then everything everywhere. [04:57] All at once crazy, Rich Asians dung, [04:59] she and then, of course, the minion. [05:01] So now I have a 3 year old Dominion, [05:06] Chevrolet Envoy. The rise of Gru scary possible mother-in-law [05:20] at that time. [05:23] The youngsters were just beginning this new generation [05:26] of film goes with starting to. [05:29] See who I was, because I remembered young journalist coming [05:33] into the room and they said, my parents are really happy and [05:36] doing this interview with you. [05:38] And I'm okay about 22 years ago, [05:42] they were just like seven or eight, [05:44] right? So, then Along Comes A chamchi and shang-chi propelled [05:49] me into the Marvel world and they all right. [05:55] And when everything everywhere exploded, [05:59] I think we would just so blessed that the Stars aligned in every [06:04] possible way people are, we had Champions who believe in our [06:09] reared, wonderful. But it also really resonated with the Young [06:15] Generation who lives in a time, where they're overloaded [06:19] with information, they travel the world, even without being [06:26] that. So they understand. [06:29] So they do look at us and do what we don't have. [06:32] We can communicate with each other. [06:34] How can you tell me how to read my life when you don't even [06:38] know how to organize your phone or your iPad? [06:41] So it was very important that we let's not judge each other. [06:49] Let's be willing to communicate and I think that's what we all [06:53] need. Kindness, family, communication and love. [06:58] And so I was there [07:06] So so much Variety in in in what you've done over the years, [07:10] but now you're about to just just today hot off the presses [07:13] and now you're about to do something. [07:15] You've never done before, yes. [07:20] We're going to sing for us. [07:26] Wicked. As you're going to be tomorrow, [07:29] both one of the great characters in The Wicked movies. [07:32] No, I've never actually when we was doing friends and people [07:41] would say, so what is the Multiverse Universe? [07:45] You would love. [07:47] I said, I would love to sing. [07:49] I can say that, but I don't actually sick then John choose [07:55] the director of crazy Rich Asians and who called me and said, [08:03] I would love to meet you. [08:04] And I like John anytime, so we met and he says, [08:08] I'm doing this. [08:09] And I would really, really, really like you to consider [08:11] this. You realize, I don't think it'll be fine. [08:18] Then the next thing, she went to London and I get this video [08:22] from him, he's with Ariana Grande. [08:34] You must come. [08:36] It's imperative imperative. [08:40] So here I am next year. [08:44] I'll be joining them and I'm very very excited. [08:46] I can't wait. [08:50] One of my favorite to two last questions. [08:54] I can't let you off the stage without talking about stunts [08:58] because you're famous for them even doing them forever. [09:02] You're still doing, I think you did most all of your stunts [09:05] and everything everywhere. [09:06] How do you [09:09] So, how you doing with all those stunts? [09:11] But you know, how do you decide what you're going to do, [09:13] versus what you're not going to do? [09:15] Is there a lion and all those stunts in this, [09:19] in this last film? [09:28] I mean, these guys, the Jackie Chan Jet Li the same old hole. [09:34] They paid their dues [09:38] By, you know, they were not giving it handed it on a silver [09:42] platter, they broke bones. [09:44] They hurt themselves because they were doing it for real. [09:47] When I went to Hong Kong, you know, [09:50] the women was very much the damsel-in-distress. [09:52] We will always [09:55] I don't think I'm going to do that. [09:57] So then when I first started then I realized how much physically [10:06] you have to really enjoy and train for but once and I think [10:13] that something that's resonated throughout my life and my career [10:16] is like you must not be able to fail afraid to fail. [10:21] But first You Must Fall Before You Learn to Fly and then it's [10:26] like when you are committed then there's no room for hesitation. [10:28] So unless you say I can't do it and I trained with all the [10:34] sun men son choreographers so they understand what are my capabilities [10:39] and you have to be very honest with yourself because we take [10:45] the punches, we take the blows but that's the easy part is like [10:49] when you cousin Hong Kong, we didn't have the luxury of [10:53] Special effects when we first started. [10:55] So when they say William from there to here we have a wire for [11:02] the wire. It's like a toothpick. [11:03] So if you make a southern movement, [11:06] it will break like that. [11:09] Right. Now, when I did it with tears, [11:10] coming off the building, we had cable to my game Tomorrow, [11:18] Never Dies. So it is very at that time. [11:21] I think when you're young and you're stupid and you're crazy. [11:23] And I must say, I was a little bit that I took a lot [11:29] of, but because I had the confidence with my team and myself [11:36] and I thought I was physically capable of doing it. [11:40] So I did take a, maybe a little bit too many risks cuz when [11:45] I watch super cop now, I'm thinking, [11:46] thank God, I did it then and I'm never going to do those crazy [11:49] things again, but it is. [11:53] That it's it over to make it that much, [11:56] special and real. [12:00] You know, if you don't take risks sometimes you never going to [12:03] make that special weed. [12:05] But now it's like you have to know your limitations and also [12:10] it's the insurance companies don't like her back riding mower, [12:17] riding a motorcycle that all listed and dangerous things. [12:21] How am I going to explain? [12:22] You just jumped off the building onto a train or something [12:26] like that. So it's all I'm with a little bit wiser. [12:35] You draw the lights, more clearly. [12:39] Well, that sucks. [12:40] I think there's a lot of lessons for all of us in that, [12:42] if you aren't, I don't do my own stunts.
