But its biggest problem, according to analysts, is something the company initially assumed would be its biggest draw: Trump himself. [Social media networks](https://time.com/6201636/bereal-popularity-challenges/) that quickly capture large audiences tend to appeal to people across boundaries of age, location, economic status, race or political affiliation. But TRUTH Social, co-founded by the divisive former president, is targeting a very specific and much narrower audience, hampering its prospects for growth. “Because TRUTH Social is an echo chamber, mainly for Trump followers, it doesn’t have the same kinds of diversity of opinion and content that make mainstream social media platforms appeal to the masses,” says [Ryan Neville-Shepard](https://uark.academia.edu/RyanNevilleShepard), an associate professor of communication at the University of Arkansas who researches American political rhetoric. “And if it doesn’t appeal to the masses, it’s not going to be extremely profitable.” TRUTH Social did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment. The company’s [app has yet to be approved for Google’s Play store](https://www.axios.com/2022/08/30/trump-truth-social-google-android-moderation). The holdup stems from the social network’s lack of sufficient [content moderation](https://time.com/6147458/facebook-africa-content-moderation-employee-treatment/), according to Google, a problem that plagues [other conservative-leaning platforms](https://time.com/5928982/deplatforming-trump-parler/), too. **Read more:** [_Trump’s Social Platform Is Still Floundering Despite Boost from Jan. 6 Hearings_](https://time.com/6186566/trump-truth-social-jan-6-hearings/) ## **The free-speech conundrum** TRUTH Social advertises itself as a refuge for free speech. But its content moderation policies have consistently created issues for the site. TRUTH Social has come under fire both for filtering seemingly innocuous posts and hosting violent ones. “When we have platforms like TRUTH Social where there’s not moderation to the extent that we see in other places, people are going to push the boundaries of that,” says [Shannon McGregor](http://hussman.unc.edu/directory/faculty/shannon-c-mcgregor), an assistant professor of communication at the University of North Carolina who researches the role of social media in political processes. There have already been alleged incitements to violence on the platform. Earlier this month, posts appeared from an account using the name [Ricky Shiffer](https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/08/12/fbi-cincinnati-ricky-shiffer/). That’s the name of the man authorities say attempted to breach an FBI field office in Cincinnati, before he was killed by law enforcement. Ahead of the attack, the account posted a “call to arms” on TRUTH Social and told people to “get whatever you need to be ready for combat.” Content moderation at scale is challenging for even the biggest and most experienced platforms, says McGregor: “We see these problems everywhere. But we see them more often on platforms where content moderation is not a priority and there aren’t resources dedicated to it.” These issues quickly can spiral into financial trouble for tech platforms. A lack of moderation can start to alienate both users and advertisers if it opens the door to violent content, says Neville-Shepard. “Who wants to advertise on a platform that has a lot of extremist views?” he says. “It’s not a great business model.” ## **The trouble with TRUTH Social’s ties to Trump** TRUTH Social is in a unique position compared to other alternative right-wing Twitter clones like Gettr, Parler, and Gab because its success inherently hinges on Trump’s popularity, says Neville-Shepard. “If Trump declines, so does his platform,” he says. The [Washington _Post_ ](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/08/27/trump-truth-social-mar-a-lago-fbi/)reported on Saturday that while the [FBI’s recent search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate](https://time.com/6209188/trump-redacted-affidavit-mar-a-lago/) initially fueled a surge of user activity on TRUTH Social, in the days since, U.S. site traffic has declined to about 300,000 views per day, according to estimates from online analytics firm Similarweb. That’s way down from the nearly 1.5 million U.S. views it logged on the day of its February launch. Trump himself has fewer than 4 million followers on TRUTH Social, a fraction of the following of more than 80 million he had on Twitter before being permanently banned in January 2021\. That means that far fewer people are seeing what Trump has to say about topics like the [Jan. 6 hearings](https://time.com/6199689/trump-republicans-jan-6-hearings-glass-jaw/) and the [FBI affidavit used to raid Mar-a-Lago](https://time.com/6208952/trump-estate-documents-fbi-affidavit-shows-concerns/). There’s a disconnect between TRUTH Social becoming a profitable business and also serving as a megaphone for Trump, according to Neville-Shepard. “The question is whether or not they can expand their audience,” he says. “But the dual purpose of the platform shows they’re probably distracted about what their business goals really are.” Amid the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) ongoing investigations into both [Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot](https://time.com/6209156/trump-documents-fbi-jan-6/) and [his handling of classified White House documents](https://time.com/6208952/trump-estate-documents-fbi-affidavit-shows-concerns/), [Fox Business](https://www.foxbusiness.com/features/trump-social-media-app-facing-financial-fallout) reported on Friday that TRUTH Social’s finances may be in “significant disarray.” The report alleged that, among other problems, TRUTH Social owes conservative web-hosting service RightForge around $1.6 million in contractually obligated payments. Meanwhile, according to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) [filings](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001849635/000119312522161830/d265650ds1.htm) from [Digital World Acquisition Corp.](https://time.com/6125995/truth-social-trump-funding-digital-world/), the special purpose acquisition company set to take TRUTH Social parent Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) public, TRUTH Social still has no guaranteed source of revenue six months after its launch. Digital World has [previously disclosed](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1849635/000119312522172206/d355466d425.htm) that SEC and DOJ probes into its planned merger with TMTG could “materially delay, materially impede, or prevent the consummation” of the deal. Ultimately, TRUTH Social’s downfall could create an opportunity for another alternative right-wing platform to rise in its place, says Neville-Shepard. “The conservative platform that will do the best is the one that can draw the most conservative influencers,” he says. “Trump tends to be the conservative influencer taking all the attention on social media, but he probably only has influence as long as he’s in politics. Another platform could still easily be lifted up by other influencers on the right.” ## Transcript [00:00] I happened been on their cover like 14 or 15 times. [00:09] He first landed on the cover on January 16th, [00:12] 1989, 28 years before his inauguration, since before his election. [00:18] Trump has regularly campaigned to be named Time's Person of the Year [00:22] using rallies and his Twitter feed to comment on Time's choices. [00:26] They should have picked me for the Person of the Year, but they didn't know. [00:29] They said. [00:30] And perhaps most notably, fake time [00:32] travelers were designed to hang in his golf course clubhouses. [00:36] Time has a long history of featuring presidents on the cover, [00:39] and Trump has been no exception. [00:42] Eight of the top ten people to appear most often on Time's cover are U.S. [00:46] presidents. [00:48] Trump finished his term with 35 covers, the fourth [00:52] most of any president behind Richard Nixon's 55 covers. [00:56] Ronald Reagan with 46 and Bill Clinton with 40. [01:15] We first introduced candidate Trump [01:17] to Time's readers in August of 2015, [01:21] when photographer Martin Schaller and Time editor at large Paul Moakley [01:25] brought a live bald eagle to the Trump Tower in New York City for a portrait. [01:30] This symbol of democracy was particularly animated during the photo [01:34] and video session, even angrily nipping at the president's hand [01:42] during the 2016 campaign. [01:45] We produced seven covers featuring Trump and created an original visual language [01:49] for this president with the artwork of artist Adele Rodriguez. [01:53] Rodriguez, who worked as Time's international art director in the 1990s [01:57] as a strong, simple, graphic style that immediately grabbed worldwide [02:01] recognition with the meltdown cover, a reflection [02:05] of his slumping campaign following the Republican National Convention. [02:09] Two months later, in response to the release of the infamous Access [02:13] Hollywood tape, [02:14] Rodriguez followed with an updated image with the headline Total Meltdown. [02:21] Of course, TIME reports many different topics, [02:23] and the visual approaches on the cover reinforces that variety. [02:27] We have presented President Trump [02:29] as a frenetic Twitter user, crumbling at the Washington Monument, [02:32] a punching bag, a graphic wrecking ball, [02:36] an angry character with his hair on fire, [02:39] a cross between himself and Vladimir Putin, a king looking into a cover, [02:44] a slingshot holding fighter, dueling with Nancy Pelosi, [02:48] a happy president, whistling under an umbrella in the rain, [02:52] and a man who has painted himself into a corner. [02:56] We've also photographed Trump for multiple covers, [02:59] including a White House tour for our May 22nd, 2017 cover and an Oval Office [03:04] conversation in the summer of 2019 on [03:08] Trump's plan to keep the White House. [03:11] My favorite time cover of Trump [03:13] is nothing to See Here from February 27, 2017. [03:17] I believe the strongest time covers leave space [03:20] for a variety of perspectives for this cover. [03:23] If you're an opponent of President Trump, you look at the cover [03:27] and you see all the chaos that this man has created. [03:30] And if you're a supporter of the president, [03:33] you look at it and say, even among all the chaos in Washington, [03:37] look how resolute he is sitting behind that desk. [03:40] That is a great place for a time cover to be. [03:44] That image was [03:44] created by longtime Time collaborator Tim O'Brien, [03:48] who has painted more covers in the past 30 years than any other artist. [03:53] It was the first of what would become a series of four paintings from O'Brien [03:57] depicting Trump in a growing storm within the Oval Office. [04:03] Our Trump covers have certainly not been without debate. [04:06] An image we created of Trump staring down at a young immigrant girl [04:10] for our Welcome to America cover sparked controversy. [04:14] During the campaign, Trump frequently used the cover, proclaiming [04:18] how Trump won as a selling point on the campaign trail. [04:22] On numerous occasions, the president also tweeted out [04:25] a fake time cover animation of how Trumpism outlasts Trump. [04:29] A cover from October 22nd, 2018. [04:34] But for most of the past year, the president's image on [04:36] the cover took a backseat to front line workers. [04:39] Racial injustice, protests and the rising COVID numbers. [04:44] And even though the image of Trump wasn't physically [04:46] shown on two recent covers, his influence was still present. [04:53] While Trump's presidency has [04:54] come to a close, it's certainly possible that we haven't seen the last of him.
