### FAQ

#### Is a PMP certification worth it?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is widely considered a valuable certification for project managers seeking to advance their careers. According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. The organization also produces research and thought leadership on emerging trends, helping professionals stay current with skills in areas like AI, agile practices, and strategic business management. These resources are designed to help professionals at all levels enhance their skills and advance their careers.

#### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The PMP (Project Management Professional)® and CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)® are both certifications offered by PMI, but they target professionals at different career stages. The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. Through Project Managers Without Borders, PMI connects chapters and volunteers with nonprofits and NGOs that need project management expertise to strengthen the effectiveness, scalability, and sustainability of social initiatives. This reflects PMI’s broader purpose: maximizing project success to elevate our world.

## TIME Staff

May 1, 2019 11:00 AM UTC

A freelance reporter missing in Tanzania, a newspaper editor facing censorship in South Sudan and two journalists detained in Nicaragua are all among those on this month’s list of the 10 Most Urgent threats to press freedom.

The list — released monthly by the One Free Press Coalition, which was [founded by a dozen news organizations](http://time.com/5541286/one-free-press-10-most-urgent-journalists/), including TIME, with the goal of defending journalists under attack — identifies 10 of the most severe examples of threats to press freedom around the world.

Last year, TIME named [The Guardians](http://time.com/person-of-the-year-2018-the-guardians/) the 2018 Person of the Year, [recognizing four journalists and one news organization](http://time.com/person-of-the-year-2018-the-guardians-choice/) for their work in the face of threats. One of those journalists, [Jamal Khashoggi](http://time.com/5428159/jamal-khashoggi-murder/), remains on the [10 Most Urgent list](https://www.onefreepresscoalition.com) for the month of May.

At the TIME 100 Summit last week, senior White House adviser Jared Kushner [said he does not “dispute”](http://time.com/5576551/jared-kushner-saudi-arabia/) the conclusion by U.S. intelligence officials that [Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman](http://time.com/longform/mohammed-bin-salman/) ordered Khashoggi’s death. Kushner said he spoke to bin Salman after Khashoggi’s death and urged him to “be as transparent as possible.” In April, the U.S. State Department [barred 16 Saudis](http://time.com/5566366/state-dept-bars-16-jamal-khashoggi/) from the country for their roles in Khashoggi’s killing, but the Trump Administration has not publicly held bin Salman responsible, leading to calls for greater accountability.

Read about the journalists on the May list below, included in no specific order:

### 1\. [**Azory Gwanda** ](https://cpj.org/data/people/azory-gwanda/index.php)**(**[**Tanzania**](https://cpj.org/africa/tanzania/)**): Independent Tanzanian journalist goes missing.**

Azory Gwanda, a freelance journalist working in rural Tanzania, has been missing since November 21, 2017\. Before his disappearance, Gwanda had been investigating [mysterious killings](https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-11-12-southern-african-muckraking-the-disappearance-of-tanzanian-journalist-azory-gwanda/) in his community. The Tanzanian government has so far failed to launch a credible investigation into his case.

### 2\. [**Wa Lone**](https://cpj.org/data/people/wa-lone/index.php) **and** [**Kyaw Soe Oo**](https://cpj.org/data/people/kyaw-soe-oo/index.php) **(**[**Myanmar**](https://cpj.org/asia/myanmar/)**)** **:** **Reuters reporters imprisoned under the Official Secrets Act** **.**

Following their [investigation](https://cpj.org/blog/2018/05/people-need-to-know-why-our-journalists-were-arres.php) into a security force massacre of Rohingya men and boys in western Rakhine State, the pair were convicted under the colonial-era Official Secrets Act and sentenced to seven years each in prison, even though a policeman testified that they had been entrapped. The Myanmar Supreme Court recently [upheld](https://cpj.org/2019/04/myanmar-court-rejects-reuters-journalists-appeal.php) their convictions.

### 3\. [**Miguel Mora and Lucía Pineda**](https://cpj.org/2018/12/nicaraguan-police-raid-independent-news-station-ar.php) **(**[**Nicaragua**](https://cpj.org/americas/nicaragua/)**): Nicaraguan journalists detained amid media crackdown.**

In December, Nicaraguan police [raided](https://cpj.org/2018/12/nicaraguan-police-raid-independent-news-station-ar.php) TV station 100% Noticias and arrested station director Miguel Mora and Lucía Pineda, its news director. Both journalists are being [held](https://cpj.org/blog/2019/02/cpj-rsf-call-on-nicaragua-to-release-two-journalis.php) on charges of “inciting hate and violence” and have been denied consistent access to legal services.

### 4\. [**Miroslava Breach Velducea**](https://cpj.org/data/people/miroslava-breach-velducea/) **(**[**Mexico**](https://cpj.org/americas/mexico/)**): Murdered for reporting on corruption and politics.**

In March 2017, _La Jornada_ correspondent [Miroslava Breach Velducea](https://cpj.org/2017/03/mexican-journalist-shot-dead-in-chihuahua.php) was murdered in the state of Chihuahua in connection to her reporting on links between politicians and organized crime. Prior to her death, she had received threats on at least three occasions for her reporting. Currently there is one suspect in custody, and the next hearing is expected to take place in the coming months.

### 5\. [**Claudia Duque**](https://www.iwmf.org/community/claudia-julieta-duque/) **(Colombia):** **Veteran investigative reporter deserves justice for harassment and attacks.**

[Duque](https://www.iwmf.org/community/claudia-julieta-duque/) has endured kidnapping, [illegal surveillance](https://cpj.org/blog/2016/02/are-intelligence-sector-reforms-enough-to-protect-.php), [psychological torture](https://cpj.org/2014/12/colombian-official-convicted-of-psychological-tort.php), and exile as a result of her work. Colombian courts convicted three high-ranking officers of the Colombian security services for torturing Claudia and her daughter in 2003 and 2004\. As of May 2019, all the defendants in the case were free.

### **6\.** [**Mahmoud Abou Zeid (Shawkan) and Alaa Abdelfattah**](https://cpj.org/blog/2019/04/egypt-shawkan-abdelfattah-release-custody.php) **(**[**Egypt**](https://cpj.org/mideast/egypt/)**):** **Still not free, even after prison release.**

Egyptian blogger [Alaa Abdelfattah](https://cpj.org/campaigns/free-the-press/alaa-abdelfattah.php) and photographer [Mahmoud Abou Zeid (Shawkan)](https://cpj.org/campaigns/egypt/justice-delayed.php) were released this year after spending over five years behind bars. However, both have to report to a police station each evening, and it is up to the police whether they can leave. So far, both have spent every night of their “freedom” behind bars.

### 7\. [**Aasif S**](https://cpj.org/data/people/aasif-sultan/index.php)[**ultan**](https://cpj.org/data/people/aasif-sultan/index.php) **(India): Imprisoned on anti-state charges for covering conflict.**

[Aasif Sultan](https://cpj.org/2018/09/cpj-calls-on-indian-police-to-release-journalist-i.php), a reporter with _Kashmir Narrator_, was arrested on anti-state charges in August 2018\. He has been [repeatedly interrogated and asked to reveal sources by police](https://cpj.org/2019/01/cpj-calls-on-jammu-and-kashmir-governor-to-release.php), and has experienced health issues as he remains behind bars.

### 8\. [**Jamal Khashoggi**](https://cpj.org/data/people/jamal-khashoggi/index.php) **(Saudi Arabia): Justice denied for murdered Saudi journalist.**

Months after his brutal murder at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, and despite findings from the CIA that point to the Saudi crown prince’s involvement, there has been no [independent UN criminal investigation](https://cpj.org/blog/2018/10/the-paths-to-justice-in-jamal-khashoggis-murder.php). [Calls](https://cpj.org/2019/02/justiceforjamal-campaign-culminates-with-call-for-.php) for the White House to release intelligence reports have gone unheeded, along with a deadline to reply to Congress as required under the U.S. [Global Magnitsky Act](https://cpj.org/2019/02/justiceforjamal-campaign-culminates-with-call-for-.php).

### 9\. [**Mimi Mefo**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6bEuyrkIbQ) **(**[**Cameroon**](https://cpj.org/africa/cameroon/)**): An arrest on false news and cybercrime charges.**

In November 2018, journalist Mimi Mefo was [arrested on false news and cybercrime charges](https://cpj.org/2018/11/cpj-calls-on-cameroon-to-drop-charges-against-mimi.php) in connection to her [reporting on unrest](https://medium.com/@IWMF/persisting-under-threat-the-toll-of-fake-news-bc35533d4913) in the conflict-hit North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. While she was released after four days, she continues to speak out against harassment of journalists throughout Cameroon and the impact of the conflict.

### 10\. [**Anna Nimiriano**](https://www.iwmf.org/reporting/she-bears-witness-to-south-sudans-turbulence-one-headline-at-a-time/) **(**[**South Sudan**](https://cpj.org/africa/south-sudan/)**): Newspaper editor in South Sudan lives under constant threat.**

As editor of the _Juba Monitor_, Nimiriano [fights](http://www.jubamonitor.com/the-rise-to-fame-of-a-female-journalist-anna-nimiriano/) to keep her colleagues out of jail for their reporting, and has in the past been ordered by the government to shut down the paper. She perseveres in spite of arrest threats and [constant censorship](https://cpj.org/2016/07/south-sudan-authorities-arrest-editor-order-juba-m.php) of her and her colleagues.
