Lily Allen’s “L8 CMMR” is the second track from Girls’ upcoming soundtrack Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do… to see release this week, arriving on the heels of Miguel’s smoky, lustful “Simplethings.”
It’s only Allen’s third piece of original material since 2009’s sophomore solo effort It’s Not Me, It’s You, and the song captures the show’s idiosyncratic spirit in a way that’s rewarding for neophytes and committed fans alike: Its manic, pogo-stick energy and chip-tuned fizz is immediately refreshing. But the song is also on point for the show’s subject matter: Allen’s cheeky, sweet lyrical look at a committed relationship invites listeners to look back at three seasons’ worth of romantic success and failure for Girls’ central quartet.
