Chris Brown’s assault trial will go forward in Washington D.C. after a judge dismissed the defense’s attempt to get the charges dropped against the singer and his bodyguard Monday.
Brown and his bodyguard are facing charges for allegedly punching a man in Washington last October who tried to get in a picture Brown was taking. Police say Brown punched the man first, then his body guard attacked him, and that the victim was treated for a fractured nose and head injuries.
Brown’s lawyers tried to get the charges dismissed by claiming that prosecutors had abused the grand jury process to prepare for trial, but Judge Patricia Wynn wasn’t buying it. Brown’s lawyer Mark Geragos called the incident “the most investigated misdemeanor of all time.” The singer and ex-boyfriend of Rihanna will wait in a local jail until his trial begins.
At the time of the alleged assault, Brown was already on probation for hitting Rihanna in 2009. After his arrest in Washington he entered an anger-management treatment program, but was then jailed in mid-March for violating the program rules. He was escorted back to the nation’s capital by U.S. marshals to face trial.
If convicted of the assault in Washington, Brown could spend more time behind bars. The trial of Brown’s bodyguard is to commence April 17, and Brown’s will go ahead after that ends.
