Mean Girls and Spongebob Squarepants, both powerhouses in film and television, are now forces to be reckoned with at the 2018 Tony Awards.
The two new musicals led the pack for the 72nd Annual Tony Awards with 12 nominations each, exhibiting a Broadway season filled with notable entertainment brands reimagined on stage. The critically acclaimed new musical The Band’s Visit followed with 11 nominations, and so did the revivals of Angels in America and Carousel. The highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two and musical revival My Fair Lady received 10 nods each.
With the smallest crop of eligible shows for Tony nominations in years, productions this year marked a trend with a reliance on massive entertainment brands and, in some cases, star power. Frozen, the live-action version of the hit 2013 Disney film, joined Mean Girls, Spongebob and The Band’s Visit among the nominees for Best Musical. And Harry Potter and the Cursed Child brought the mega-hit to the American stage for the first time. Big names in film and television like Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield, Amy Schumer, Tina Fey and Michael Cera were also recognized for their work on Broadway this season. Bruce Springsteen will also receive an honorary Tony in wake of his consistently sold-out Springsteen on Broadway. John Leguizamo, whose one-man show Latin History for Morons was nominated for Best Play, will also receive a special Tony Award.
The official Tony Award nominations were announced Tuesday morning by Leslie Odom Jr., who won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, and Katharine McPhee, the American Idol star who made her Broadway debut as the lead in Waitress in April.
Both fresh off of Broadway runs, Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban will host the 72nd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 10.
With no clear front-runners like Hamilton or Dear Evan Hansen, the 2018 Tony Awards are a wide-open playing field.
