You’ll be seeing a lot of purple everywhere next year. Global color authority Pantone just announced its 2018 Color of the Year Pantone 18-3838, also known as Ultra Violet. The color is not just a trending hue, but according to Pantone, it also “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.” The color experts cite innovative music legends Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix as using the color to express individuality. The color also has a spiritual connotation—purple-toned lighting is often used in meditation spaces. While 2017’s color, Greenery, was all about hope and renewal, this year’s hue has a similar optimistic, yet mystic message.“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a press release. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” Eiseman said the hue suggests the mysteries of the cosmos as well as the intrigue of the future. Its evocation of the night also symbolizes what is possible beyond our own world.
