On a new episode of “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations” Oprah Winfrey explained that President Donald Trump winning the 2016 election made her rethink what it takes to be president. When Rubenstein asked if Winfrey had ever thought about running for office herself, the 63-year-old media mogul paused before responding: “I never considered the question even a possibility… I thought oh, gee I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough.”
“But now I’m thinking…oh,” she added. Despite the ambiguity of her response, Winfrey sent the internet into a #Oprah2020 frenzy. Politico even ran a piece titled “The Serious Case for Oprah 2020.”
It wasn’t the first time Winfrey revealed how Trump changed her perspective on running for office. “Until this election year I thought…I have no qualifications to run… After this year, I’m feeling really qualified!” she joked on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year.
However, Winfrey’s close friend and “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King laughed off the possibility, saying it would “never” happen. “I was in the audience that day and it was clearly a joke when she was playing with David [Rubenstein] because they have such a great rapport,” King said on her show. “But I also heard on the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show,’ guys, over the years, you always have the right to change your mind. But I would bet my first, second born and any unborn children to come, that ain’t never happening.”
