Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano “Ace” Ventura, 25, in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. The young baseball star pitched in two World Series.

> Charlie Liteky, 85, an Army chaplain in Vietnam who received the Medal of Honor but returned it in 1986 in protest over U.S. policies in Central America.

> Mark Baumer, 33, a writer and activist who was struck by an SUV while walking across the U.S. barefoot to raise awareness about climate change.
