Before they broke off their engagement, Mariah Carey‘s busy schedule put a damper on her wedding plans with Australian billionaire James Packer.
In the premiere of Carey’s new reality series Mariah’s World, the singer discussed delaying her nuptials in the midst of wrapping up her Las Vegas residency and preparing for her European tour.
“You’re superwoman and you can do this, but how are we going to pull this off?” Carey’s manager, Stella Bulochnikov, said in Sunday’s episode. “I feel like you’ll be putting your professional life before your personal life and it makes me feel bad, but dare I say, do you postpone the wedding?”
Carey acknowledged that putting an “entire tour together in two weeks” is no easy feat, but deciding whether to delay the wedding was no walk in the park either.
“This is a hard decision to make. I’m not sitting around, like, ‘Oh, just blow off the wedding,’ ” the star said. “I’m sitting here going, ‘How am I supposed to fulfill my professional obligations and not disappoint my team.”
In the end, she decided to postpone the wedding, prompting an emotional phone conversation with Packer, who tells her the wedding date is in her hands.
“I feel bad because I know I’ve disappointed James by postponing the wedding but what I need to focus on right now is this tour,” Carey said.
It may have been a tough choice for Carey, but the singer’s decision to put the music on hold was music to Bulochnikov’s ears.
“I’m actually thrilled that Mariah wants to postpone her wedding because I’ve been dealing with the prenup and it’s definitely not the most romantic thing I’ve read, I’ll tell you that,” she said.
“So I feel like we should meet our professional obligations first before jumping into any personal commitments at this moment.”
The talk of wedding delays and prenuptial agreements are long gone now that Carey and Packer have called it quits.
They ended their engagement in October. And although it initially looked like there was a chance for reconciliation, Carey has since been since getting close with her backup dancer Bryan Tanaka.
Carey and Packer first met in Aspen, Colorado, in 2014 at the Hercules premiere. They went public with their romance a year later in June 2015, and made it red carpet official months later at the New York City premiere of The Intern. The billionaire businessman proposed to Carey in her hometown of New York City on Jan. 21.
