Five new songs to take you into the weekend, from a very different-sounding John Legend song to Childish Gambino’s funky, sunny standout track off his new album and catchy new sounds from 3LAU, MUNA and Milky Chance.
“What You Do to Me,” John Legend
Silky crooner John Legend goes darker and edgier on “What You Do to Me,” an intense love song off new album Darkness and Light that breaks from his usual R&B ballads. Here, he replaces emotional piano chords with low synths and an aggressive beat, his voice seething over the percussive backing.
“I Know a Place,” MUNA
L.A.-based girl band MUNA’S fresh single “I Know a Place” is an unapologetic, uplifting anthem for the LGBTQ community, calling out the hope for safe spaces. The pop-rock trio’s infectious sound will speak to everyone, regardless of their self-definition.
“You Want More,” 3LAU
DJ 3LAU is known for powerful bass drops and electro bangers, but “You Want More” is a more laid-back track, a melodic listen with smooth vocals and an easy vibe. Plus, every play is donated to an educational charity, so you can do good even while chilling out.
“California,” Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino’s new album, Awaken, My Love!, is a quirky, funk-inspired turnaround for actor-musician Donald Glover. “California” is easily the catchiest of the tracks, with a sunny hook and a tropical, throwback vibe that sets you up for dreaming of lazy days in the Golden State.
“Cocoon,” Milky Chance
German folk group Milky Chance has a slightly grungy sound underscored by naturally upbeat tunes—they fall somewhere between the folksy rock of Vampire Weekend and the haunting electropop of Beach House. It’s the kind of low-key alt-rock that appeals to indie listeners and mainstream pop fans alike; their latest release, “Cocoon,” is a pleasantly off-kilter toe-tapper.
