Kanye West has been discharged from UCLA Medical Center, where he has been under heavy medical supervision since being admitted on Nov. 21.
“He is home, getting some rest,” a source close to West confirms to PEOPLE.
“Kanye is at home with Kim and the kids. He seems okay and happy to be home. Kim’s family is visiting,” a source close to the family tells PEOPLE. “Kanye will continue to receive treatment and help with how to cope with stress. He needs to learn how to better balance his work and family life.”
West, 39, was hospitalized for exhaustion and sleep deprivation shortly after he canceled the remaining dates of his Saint Pablo tour, and remained there over the Thanksgiving holiday. Sources close to the rapper insist that he was not committed against his wishes.
“He went to the hospital at will under the advice of his physician,” a source told PEOPLE, adding that the entertainer “was not restrained” and “went freely.”
Wife Kim Kardashian West, who had been in New York City to attend an event honoring her late father, Robert Kardashian, returned to Los Angeles to be by West’s side as he recovered from his physical and emotional meltdown.
“The only person Kanye trusts is Kim,” a source previously told PEOPLE. “Kim does spend hours with Kanye every day.” A family insider says that the episode has left Kardashian West, 36, feeling “overwhelmed” and concerned about West’s relationship with their children, North, 3, and Saint, 11 months.
“She is very worried about the kids being around Kanye,” another source close to the family told PEOPLE.
In recent years, West’s outspoken manner and volatile conduct has become nearly as famous as his chart-topping records. “This has been going on for years,” one insider told PEOPLE of the rapper’s history of personal struggles and erratic behavior. “In the past when Kanye seemed to struggle, no one took it too seriously. The attitude was more like it was just Kanye being Kanye.” But after going through a few rough days, the source says eventually “things would go back to normal. This time is much different.”
In addition to the usual rigors of touring life, the source points to the absence of Kardashian West — who was recovering from an armed robbery in Paris — that may have contributed to her husband’s recent breakdown.
“Without having Kim by his side during the tour as planned, Kanye wasn’t able to snap back. Kim being absent because of her own struggles seems to be why things are different with Kanye this time,” said the insider.
Others insist that a contributing factor is the unexpected death of his mother, Dr. Donda West, in 2007 — nine years ago this month. “His mother died in November, so this time of year always brings him a lot of pain,” says another source close to the artist. “He keeps that pain internalized, but sometimes will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November.”
Kendall Jenner had some kind words for her brother-in-law while preparing to walk at her second Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris on Wednesday.
“Everyone’s okay,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “Everyone is doing okay — just praying.”
Jenner, 21, added: “Yes, of course [he’ll be okay].”
x17online was first to report West’s release.
