Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Tuesday is expected to address alleged attempts by Russian hackers to influence the U.S. presidential election.
Clapper is expected to address the issue while speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Reuters reported.
Intelligence officials have said Russian operatives were responsible for a hack of the Democratic National Committee emails this summer, and the White House has since officially accused the Russian government of meddling in the U.S. election.
While intelligence officials have warned about Russian attempts to interfere, officials have said hackers would not be able to alter the election’s outcome because of the decentralized electoral system. Elections are handled by state and local authorities, not by the federal government.
