The Nobel Committee awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his efforts to end a 52-year conflict with the left-wing FARC guerrillas.

Although his efforts were hampered when Colombians narrowly rejected the peace accord in a shock Oct. 2 referendum result, the Norwegian committee recognized Santos for his consistent work towards ending one of the longest civil conflicts in recent history.
