A year and a half after the unexpected death of her husband Dave Goldberg, Sheryl Sandberg celebrated his birthday in touching Facebook post.
“Today would have been my husband Dave Goldberg’s 49th birthday,” the Facebook COO and Lean In author captioned a photo of the couple aboard a hot air balloon. “As my children and I do every day, we miss him and mourn that he was taken from us so suddenly and so soon. We miss his smile, his generosity, his wisdom, and his love.”
She also mentioned that her husband’s birthday coincides with Erev Rosh Hashanah.
“Today is also Erev Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, when we say prayers celebrating the ‘birthday of the world,’ ” Sandberg, 47, wrote Sunday. “We focus on new beginnings, giving to others, and seeking forgiveness. We recommit to being better and working harder to move the world toward what it should be: more just, more equal, more compassionate, more kind.”
“For all of us who knew and loved Dave, this is the perfect spirit to honor his memory. Dave set an example we all still strive to live up to. Dave, the world is a better place for the years you lived – and we will always celebrate the day of your birth. I love you, Dave.”
In May, Sandberg shared a similarly emotional message in honor of the one year anniversary of Goldberg’s death.
“My deepest thanks to my family and friends who have shared their memories of Dave and carried me and my children through this past year,” Sandberg wrote exactly one year after Goldberg passed away. “I will always miss you, Dave. There is no end to love.”
