The Miami Marlins will retire the No. 16 to honor José Fernández, who died in a boat crash on Sunday.
Team owner Jeffrey Loria told reporters that no one will wear No. 16 for the Marlins again. Monday night will be the last time Marlins players wear the number on their uniforms—each team member will wear Fernández’s number in a game against the New York Mets to honor the late star pitcher.
Fernández was one of three people killed in the boat crash off Miami Beach, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The boat crashed into a jetty and was found capsized early Sunday morning.
The Marlins cancelled its Sunday game against the Atlanta Braves but will continue with the game against the Mets on Monday night.
