During her appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, Scandal star Kerry Washington had some words regarding Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway: “Kellyanne’s really good at what she does. Playing Olivia Pope, I know spin when I see it.”
Earlier in the episode, Maher had a war of words with Conway, during which the host called her out for asserting she could never work for someone who lies. “You are enabling pure evil,” he said, while later noting, “You just said you can’t support someone who ‘lies for a living,’ when I read a list of provable lies.”
Washington, in turn, pointed out how Conway, even Trump’s daughter Ivanka, have become influential assets to the Republican presidential nominee. “I think it’s important that we not be distracted by these very smart, very articulate, beautiful women who work in the Trump campaign, who are a lot smarter than the candidate, I think,” she said to applause from the live audience, “and we need to be not swayed by them because they will not have their finger on the button; he will.”
Washington also discussed the number of Millennial voters dropping out of Team Hillary Clinton. “I think there’s a bigger problem, which is that right now we are in a political climate where we are being led by the media, no offense, to vote for the loudest candidate, and the meanest, the bulliest candidate in the playground, and that we are voting based on a cult of personality or a cult of celebrity rather than voting in our best interests,” she said in part. “I think if we really look at policy, voting for Trump is voting against our best interests as Americans, as workers, as people of color, as women.”
“Not voting, is voting against ourselves,” she added, before grouping “voting for a third-party candidate” into that category.
One specific issue Washington mentioned with regards to a recently announced Trump policy is his “ridiculous maternity leave” plan. “There’s been a lot of talk about it being insulting to women, but I think it’s actually insulting to families and to workers,” she said, “because there’s no paternity leave, there’s no family leave. For Hillary Clinton, these issues, these policies are not about ‘women’s policies,’ this is about economic policy, because we understand in this country that if families are able to take care of each other, we do better as a nation. I choose that candidate over the guy who brags about having never changed a diaper.”
