Breakout Mr. Robot star Rami Malek plays a reclusive hacker in the standout conspiracy drama. His character is hyper-aware of his digital footprint, and has pretty much scrubbed the internet and social media of his presence. In real life, actor Malek also keeps a low profile online.
But on a visit to Stephen Colbert’s Late Show on Tuesday night, Colbert put Malek’s connection to his character to the test. That is, he got Malek to post his first photo — a selfie, no less — to his personal Instagram.
“I’m not crazy about social media because… I think it’s a little bit polarizing, it’s difficult to figure out exactly what’s happening on social media, you know?” Malek tells Colbert. “Things seem very manicured. I think it pits people against each other.”
“Is that why you have an Instagram account with almost 100,000 followers and no posts yet?” Colbert rejoined, showing Malek the proof.
“I had no idea I had that many followers,” Malek admitted. “That’s crazy.” So Colbert busted out his selfie stick, and history was made. The result:
