‘Mermaid Thighs’ Are the New Body-Positive Trend

2 minute read

Ariel, we’re ready to join you under the sea.

As a response to the controversial thigh gap trend, women are instead celebrating their thighs that touch, with #MermaidThighs taking over social media.

All over Instagram and Twitter, women are posting photos of their thighs with the trending hashtag to promote body positivity (and share in a common desire to be a mermaid).

“If your thighs touch, you’re one step closer to becoming a mermaid…” wrote one Instagram user.

“I would never wear a romper because the shorts are too short for me and I get major chub rub,” says another. “But I am closer to being a mermaid by having my thighs touch.”

The thigh gap trend started after women began showing off the space between their thighs, and quickly turned to backlash, with many celebrities speaking out on social media.

Singer Kesha posted a photo on Instagram with the caption “no thigh gap here” in response to body shamers, while Gwyneth Paltrow shared a photo with the message, “Let’s focus on the #PayGap. Not the #thighgap.”
