Zoe Saldana is fed up with how women in Hollywood are treated.
Saldana, who stars in the upcoming Summer blockbuster Star Trek: Beyond, recently gave an interview to Bustle about her new character and her thoughts on her industry. Sexism continues to be a problem in Hollywood, and everywhere else, says Saldana: “When you’re born, and if you have a vagina, your life is limited.”
If Meryl Streep does a movie, if Jessica Chastain does a movie, if Gugu [Mbatha-Raw] does a movie — especially if she’s the lead and we see the story through her eyes — we have to be the ones to make those stories a blockbuster hit. If a movie is over-saturated with masculinity, and being gratuitous with the female characters in it, we have to not go see that movie.
Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke shared the sentiments in an article she wrote for Motto. She writes, “Support diverse voices, and start questioning who’s making your media the same way you might question whether a corporation is aligned with your values or whether the food you’re eating is fair-trade or organic.” Lili Taylor said in a Motto article that “women in Hollywood are invisible.”
But what if gender disparities are only an earthly problem? Saldana, who also stars in other intergalactic movies such as Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy said in a 2014 Vanity Fair interview: “I like being in space because there are better parts for women in space.”
