Twenty-two-year-old actor Ansel Elgort first made a splash in pop culture as the male lead in 2014’s tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars, opposite Shailene Woodley. Since then, he’s played to the teen audience with a role in the Insurgent series and in angsty high school movie Paper Towns. But Elgort — who comes from artistic stock — is apparently not satisfied to set his sights on Hollywood stardom alone. Instead, he’s been testing the waters as a musician and singer. (Plus, he can tap dance.)
First there was his DJ persona, Ansolo; he’s played a number of high-profile festivals under that moniker. But now we have a straight-up play as a vocal artist. On Monday, Elgort posted an Instagram video of himself playing piano and singing to Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better.” More importantly: in the caption, he announces a further drop of a single called “Home Alone” on Soundcloud next week — and an official release “later this month.” You can bet that Elgort’s musical star is just beginning to rise: he’s got the singing chops, production skills, and name recognition to be a pop force to be reckoned with.
He teased the project on his official Twitter, where he has more than 3 million followers:
A Facebook Live video gave us some further insight into his process of developing and mixing tracks; he sings a stripped-down version of an original song, and then shares the produced version that he’s made on his computer. It’s very tropical house. Bieber, watch out.
He also performed a version of the upcoming single “Home Alone” at Ultra Korea a few weeks ago, giving us a peek into the mix of DJ dance track and ballad-style singing when performed live. If this song is any indication of what’s to come, then we can expect to hear a lot more of Elgort.
