Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the bestselling book, Eat, Pray, Love, announced in a Facebook post on Friday that she and her husband—better known as “Felipe” in the book, and played by Javier Bardem in the film version (which also stars Julia Roberts)—are splitting up.
Eat, Pray, Love, Gilbert’s 2006 memoir about traveling the world on a journey of self-discovery after a difficult divorce, has sold over 10 million copies. She followed that book up with Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage in 2010, which continues the tale of her life with Felipe, whom she eventually married, despite both individuals swearing off marriage ever again.
In the breakup post, Gilbert calls her most recent break-up “amicable” and that their “reasons are very personal.”
Gilbert asks for privacy “because I trust that you understand how this is a story that I am living—not a story that I am telling.” Gilbert’s eloquent message also suggests she might not appear on Facebook again for a while: “And I hope you will understand and forgive me if I am a bit absent from social media during this sensitive moment.”
