On Tuesday, J.K. Rowling revealed new details about the North American wizarding academy Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and sent the internet ablaze with excitement and speculation – what exactly is a Pukwudgie, anyway? Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, where the fictional Ilvermorny resides, took to Twitter with an unexpected suggestion for Rowling.
Senator Warren wrote, “Looking for a Defense Against the Dark Arts prof, [J.K. Rowling]? Where do I apply? Trump, Death Eaters – I got this!”
Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potter fans will remember, meant to prepare wizarding students to combat dark and powerful magic. The position was famously cursed in the Harry Potter novels, which featured a new professor in the role each year – including the deplorable Dolores Umbridge and the sly Severus Snape. Hopefully the Ilvermorny professors fare better in teaching the subject.
Strangely, this isn’t Warren’s first association with the wizarding world. Last year, Rowling revealed the true name of infamous Hogwarts ghost Moaning Myrtle: Myrtle Elizabeth Warren. The author quickly followed up the revelation by clarifying that the name had nothing to do with the Massachusetts senator.
