This Is How Beyoncé Gently Told Her Mom That She Didn’t Like Her Wedding Dress

2 minute read

Who runs the world? Girls, of course, and more specifically, Beyoncé. But it turns out, the pop diva doesn’t always get things exactly her way. In fact, according to her mom Tina Knowles (now Lawson), even on her wedding day Beyoncé ended up in a gown she wasn’t totally delighted by—but she was too nice to tell the designer, who also happened to be her mother.

While the rest of the world clamors over any glimpse they can get of the dress Bey wore on her big day, from the sound of things, the pop star is so over it. Though she married Jay Z in 2008, dress details were kept under wraps until the 2011 video for “I Was Here,” which gave fans a quick glimpse of the star’s elaborately tiered and ruffled strapless gown. Lawson can be seen doing some last minute alterations to the dress she designed as Beyoncé beams at the camera. (She shared another peek at it in the “Young Forever/Halo” video, which you can see at 2:34 below.)

Talking to the Today show on June 24 about designing her daughter’s gown, Lawson said, “She was so sweet to let me do that. She came back later one day and she said, ‘You know, when my daughter gets married, I’m going to let her pick out her own dress.’ Maybe she wasn’t so excited about it at the time, but she’s a sweetheart.”

Well, that’s Beyoncé for you. Serene and gracious even while wearing a gown she didn’t adore on her wedding day. Perhaps when you wear drop-dead gorgeous dresses every single day of the week, one flub, even one of this magnitude, is just another drop in the bucket. Or perhaps it’s time we consider appointing the singer as a U.N. diplomat. After all, if this is how Beyoncé handles her mom on her wedding day, just imagine what she could do for international conflicts.
