Before Rory Gilmore graces our Netflix accounts when Gilmore Girls returns, she decided to stop by the White House to help FLOTUS with some reading material.
The official Gilmore Girls twitter account released a video simply captioned, “Just a couple of girls talking about books…” to promote First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” initiative.
In the video (watch it below), Alexis Bledel, in character as our patron saint Rory approaches Mrs. Obama with all the gusto and excitement one might expect from the Yale grad. “I wasn’t sure about what mood you’d be in, so I brought all of Shakespeare ‘cause you can’t go wrong with the Bard,” she says, offering Obama some “light” reading on the plane to Liberia, Morocco, and Spain.
Of course, being the well-read scholar that she is, Rory also had some more options to choose from. “A little Proust. Sophie’s Choice — it doesn’t matter if you’ve seen the movie. Jane Austen, I mean, c’mon it’s Jane Austen,” she spews. “Moby Dick, Anna Karenina, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire — you know, some classic beach reads.”
The cherry on top? Lorelai is invoked as a box of blueberry Pop-Tarts (the flavor has been confirmed) emerges from Rory’s purse — a gift for the First Lady.
The Obamas launched the Let Girls Learn initiative to educate and empower adolescent girls. Learn more about the initiative on Obama’s SnapChat (user name: michelleobama), and head here for a complete preview of the Gilmore Girls Netflix revival.
