John Oliver on Sunday opened Last Week Tonight by somberly addressing the Orlando nightclub massacre, which left 49 people dead in the worst mass shooting in American history.
The host used emotive language to describe the pain that comes with learning another mass shooting has unfolded in a world plagued by gun violence. “Look, it’s still early and details are still emerging, and right now, this just hurts. And the worst thing is—this pain is so familiar,” he said. “In Paris last November, terrorists seemed to target places symbolizing everything that is wonderful about France: culture, music, restaurants. And in Orlando, early this morning, the gunman attacked a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world.”
“And for the record, I will happily embrace a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world as the ultimate symbol of what is truly wonderful about America,” he added.
Oliver then continued his comedy show by discussing money and retirement.
