Chris Evans Really Wants Brie Larson to Be the Next Captain Marvel

The potential new Captain Marvel just got Captain America’s seal of approval.

As reported earlier this week, Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning actress of Room, is in early discussions to play the title role of Captain Marvel, the female-headlined superhero film from Disney’s Marvel Studios. Like many of her fans out there, Chris Evans really hopes this happens.

Accompanied by his Captain America: Civil War costars Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) during a Wizard World panel in Philadelphia, Evans was asked about the casting. “I just heard about that,” he said. “I really hope that happens. I love Brie Larson. We did a movie together back in ‘09, we did Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I cannot say enough about Brie Larson. I think she is phenomenal, and I really hope that happens.”

Sources close to the Marvel film confirmed to EW that Larson is the likely choice for the role, barring any major upset during casting discussions. The film centers on Carol Danvers, an American security officer whose DNA is fused with that of the alien Kree race. She’ll be one of the new characters in Marvel’s Phase Three film slate, which includes Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange (Nov. 4, 2016), Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7, 2017), and Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther (Feb. 16, 2018).

Captain Marvel, which doesn’t yet have a director, is currently scheduled for release on March 8, 2019.
