Remember “Milkshake,” the provocative, euphemism-laden track from the early-aughts by singer Kelis? It forever linked the sweet drink to the line “my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,” and basically solidified Kelis’ mainstream popularity with its catchy beat and just-barely radio appropriate innuendos.
If you need a reminder on why this song was great, here’s a refresher, complete with a lesson from Kelis on how to eat a cherry seductively and a nice little cameo by Kelis’ former boo, Nas.
In the 13 years since “Milkshake” was released, Kelis put her musical career on pause, became a certified chef by way of Le Cordon Bleu, and has released a cookbook entitled, My Life on a Plate: Recipes From Around the World. Despite her bossy new culinary prowess, however, one thing Kelis won’t be serving is the very drink that launched her career.
When asked by the Guardian what would go in a “Kelis milkshake,” the singer-turned-chef revealed, “I don’t think I’ve ever made a milkshake.”
She did, however, concede that she makes a mean smoothie — but do you think boys would really come to someone’s yard for a smoothie instead of a milkshake?
Mmmhmm. That’s what we thought.
