Grimes’ new video for Art Angels track “California” refrains from typical West Coast imagery and instead features the musician performing in a variety of palm tree-free locales, including a kitschy country bar — where she dons a top covered in a glittering American flag — and an art studio full of white busts.
The “California” soundtrack in the video is different than the one that appears on the 2015 album, though: This one starts off by drowning out the vocals that usually kick off the track and adds in shimmering, dreamy synths.
“California” — directed by Grimes and her brother Mac — follows previous Art Angels videos “Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream” and “Kill V. Maim.”
