Among them: its more expansive areas, slick puzzles and superb gunplay. But something I wasn’t expecting to care about is how beguiling this game cane be—and you can see why in my latest TIME Plays video above. As [I wrote in my review](http://time.com/4313491/uncharted-4-review/): “Naughty Dog’s known for bringing processors to their knees, but what the Santa Monica-based studio accomplished here—less a show of raw power than of painterly engineering—verges on sublime.” More: --- > “” --- ## Transcript [00:01] Hello, Matt Peckham here, game critic with Time [00:02] Magazine, and today I am playing a game called [00:05] Uncharted For Thief's End, by Studio Naughty Dog. It's [00:08] the fourth and final installment in their acclaimed [00:12] uncharted series of action adventures, starring Nathan [00:15] Drake, who is a kind of swash buckling treasure [00:19] hunter. So at the beginning of the game, and some [00:22] mild spoilers here, you've hung up your shoulder [00:25] holsters, you're living the domestic life when out of [00:28] nowhere your brother Sam Drake shows up. And you [00:32] thought Sam was dead for over a decade. He's never [00:35] been in the series, he's a new edition. And Sam [00:39] says, you have to come with me Nate. This pirate [00:42] treasure that we were looking for when we were kids, I [00:44] know where it is. So this is a jungle level that takes [00:48] place about halfway through the game and the reason [00:50] I'm showing it is because it really highlights the new [00:53] stealth mechanics in the game. And it's not so much [00:56] that Nate's mechanics have changed. He still jumps on [00:59] people and hangs off the edges of cliffs and Can yank [01:02] them off, and can choke them out. He could do that [01:04] before, but the levels are much, much more open now. [01:09] And they also have all of these different stealth [01:11] pathways through them. So, you have this undergrowth [01:14] that he can crouch in, this very beautiful undergrowth. [01:17] And so it changes the whole dynamic in that in the [01:20] earlier games you pretty much had to shoot your way [01:23] through most of the game. Here you can go through a [01:27] substantial portion of the game without firing a single [01:30] shot. And then besides the new stealth stuff you also [01:32] have some new tools. One of them was in the video [01:35] just a little bit before called the pitton, it's like a spike [01:38] that you can drive into a cliff wall and use it to climb [01:42] up or arrest your descent if you're sliding down. And [01:45] speaking of sliding, there's an entirely new maneuver [01:48] you have to pull off in certain levels where they'll be [01:50] gravel, or really muddy slopes, and you'll jump [01:54] on and have to slide between platforms, and then [01:59] do that in combination with other maneuvers. And then [02:02] one of the most interesting and satisfying new tools is [02:05] the grappling hook, which you can deploy to sort of [02:08] change up a situation and move around the [02:10] environment very quickly. Like here, for instance, you [02:13] see the grappling hook icon. You hit the L1 trigger, and [02:16] then you can quickly swing over. You can land on top [02:18] of an enemy, duck behind cover. And then engage in, [02:22] a gun battle from a completely different vantage. [02:25] [ INAUDIBLE ] [02:28] [ MUSIC ] [02:31] [ SOUND ] [02:35] [ MUSIC ] [02:38] Another thing Naughty Dog managed to do with [02:40] Uncharted 4, And they've done this with all the [02:42] Uncharted games in that they are all beautiful to look [02:45] at. But, in Uncharted Forest's case it's different. [02:47] There's an order of magnitude shift here. They've [02:50] managed to create not only a unique and beautiful [02:53] environment but one that looks like nothing that you've [02:56] seen on any system before. And so, in a scene like this [02:58] you'll notice the way the light is reflecting off the Vines [03:01] on those distant ruins and then also off of the [03:04] undergrowth ring you'll see the clouds moving in front [03:08] of the sun and blocking it, you'll see low- lying mist [03:11] diffusing the light, and so I can't remember who it was [03:14] that said light is sort of the final frontier for achieving [03:18] plausible realism in virtual worlds You really feel that [03:22] here in a way that you've never felt it, or at least that [03:24] I've never felt it in a game before. So, not to obsess [03:27] about graphics because that is an old way about [03:29] thinking about games, I think, and it doesn't really [03:32] account for whether the game's actually interesting or [03:35] fun to play. But I do think that there is something [03:38] happening here. Whereby these are more than merely [03:43] game experiences now. It's kind of like traveling [03:46] abroad or going somewhere you've never been before. [03:49] There's more going on in terms of your experience [03:53] of that environment than merely the mechanical [03:57] things that you're doing in it. That aside, Unchartered [04:02] Four is unquestionably the best playing of the [04:05] Uncharted games. And I mean from the superlative [04:08] gun play and artificial intelligence to the even [04:12] more than ever fantastic exploration and puzzle [04:15] sequences. Critics of the earlier Uncharted games [04:19] have argued that the exploration sequences are too [04:24] automated in these games. That there's not enough [04:26] risk. That you're merely pushing a joystick and [04:30] watching someone automatically execute difficult [04:32] manuevers. I think that's a misunderstanding of how [04:36] the Uncharted games work. The [ UNKNOWN ] games [04:38] are not Tomb Raider, they're not Super Mario Brothers, [04:42] they're not pixel perfect platformers, they're not about [04:46] mastering light physics. They're about walking into [04:50] complicated situations and scrutinizing the [04:53] environment, and then figuring out how you're going to [04:55] move through it, enjoying the vertigo- inducing thrill [04:58] ride as you do. And then right in the middle of that [05:01] ride You'll have to stop and solve another puzzle, and [05:05] figure out another way to move through the [05:06] environment. And in Uncharted 4, that's just [05:09] multiplied. And so with all the expansive new [05:12] environments, the smarter puzzles and nonlinear [05:15] puzzle solving, [ NOISE ] the exponential improvements [05:18] to combat, and all the collectible treasures, even more [05:21] shrewdly hidden. I'm going to argue that this is [05:24] definitely the Uncharted to play even for the naysayers [05:27] that have worried that the earlier games were too [05:29] much on rails, and that's a quick look at Uncharted 4.
