Yet another Marvel superhero will be battling baddies in Hell’s Kitchen. The Punisher is officially getting his own Netflix show, the streaming service announced Friday. Jon Bernthal, who played the vindictive vet in season two of Netflix’s Daredevil, will reprise his role in the spinoff.
Like the vigilante Daredevil, the Punisher is out for vengeance. But unlike Daredevil, he has no qualms about using whatever means necessary to get it. The Marvel television shows have been much grittier than their big screen counterparts and are only likely to get darker with a Punisher spinoff.
The Punisher show will be Netflix’s sixth Marvel series. The streaming services has also produced Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders with Marvel Television, the final of which is a miniseries that will bring the Hell’s Kitchen heroes together into a super team, like a ground-level Avengers. (Netflix has not yet confirmed whether Bernthal will appear in The Defenders.)
Netflix does not release viewership numbers but independent research has suggested that Daredevil is a top-performer for the service.
