Audiences settling in to watch Disney’s new adaptation of The Jungle Book, out April 15, can expect to see a familiar story about a man-cub living among a gaggle of four-legged singing mammals. But the characters Disney first brought to the screen in 1967 now look a little different. Director Jon Favreau’s live-action/CGI adaptation-of-an-adaptation is just the latest in a sub-genre of movies that found their first success as animated features. As The Jungle Book invites comparisons between old hand-drawn Baloo and Bill Murray’s new take on the lazy bear, here’s a look back at the films that first captured our attention in two dimensions.
