At first glance, Thursday’s Google logo looks uncharacteristically bland, having replaced its usual bright colors with a plain beige. Once the interactive Google Doodle comes to life, however, bursts of virtual colored powder splatters across it.
The Doodle is, of course, celebrating Holi — the Hindu festival of color that has now become a global celebration.
Primarily observed in countries like India and Nepal, Holi begins at the onset of spring and is meant to signify the triumph of good over evil. It lasts two days, on the first of which features a symbolic bonfire and the second — the most popular part of the festival — involves people throwing colored powder and water at each other.
“Holi coincides with the beginning of Spring, and for many it’s an opportunity to indulge in the bright, colorful festivity of the new season,” Google said. “Our Doodle honors this tradition, and all those celebrating on this joyous day.”
